As the security environment has evolved, so too has our role. For some time now, our work has extended beyond export controls to span the broader research and economic security agenda, reflecting the increasingly complex and dynamic UK national security landscape.
Shaped by consultation with our members and wider stakeholders, the decision to rebrand recognises this evolution and more accurately reflects the scope and direction of our activities, as well as the community we support.
We have intentionally retained our visual identity to ensure continuity and recognisability. A subtle change, rather than a fundamental shift in who we are.
Universities and independent research organisations have a responsibility, as leaders in cutting-edge research and innovation, to contribute to the UK’s national and economic security. We develop advanced technologies, generate valuable intellectual property and collaborate globally in ways that underpin national resilience and economic competitiveness. These assets must be protected from misuse, inappropriate influence or exploitation.
The rapidly evolving geopolitical landscape, characterised by strategic competition, technological acceleration and increasing foreign interference risks, has significantly reshaped the environment in which we operate. This creates an urgent, strategic need for greater awareness, coordination and collaboration between our community and HM Government. HERSA aims to provide a practitioner-led platform to support proportionate, risk-based approaches to these shared challenges.
